  • Practicing self-massage with appropriate oils before showering or bathing is a wonderful method of promoting health.
  • Getting a professional massage at least once a month (or when one can afford it) is also highly recommended.
  • Massaging the feet (with especial attention on the soles of the feet) with oil for a few minutes before bed promotes sound sleep and helps good health.  Also massage the head with a little oil.
  • Be careful about what your senses take in – avoid extremely loud music or sounds, and protect your ears if you have to be around loud noises.  Avoid music which is agitating and discordant.
  • Keep in mind that whatever is seen and heard – particularly with entertainment or mass media – is recorded in the mind and will influence and stay with you for a long, long time.
  • Respect your body and the bodies of others as temples of the Divine – don’t defile the temples with uncleanliness, junk food, or drugs and alcohol.
  • The Ayurvedic axiom – “Eat when hungry, drink when thirsty” is a good rule to follow when hunger and thirst arise naturally.
  • Do not repress the natural urges of the body, or imbalances can develop.  Urges such as the urge to urinate, defecate, sneeze, cough, yawn, pass gas, or burping should not be unduly repressed.
  • Keep fingernails short and clean.
  • Eat with the right hand, and use the left hand for cleaning the body after using the toilet.
  • Ideally, one should shower after evacuating the bowels.
  • Be careful not to misuse sexual energy, as that is a cause of much illness and mental anxiety.
  • Appropriate exercise is necessary for good health – not to the point of exhaustion.  Avoid strenuous exercise during the menstrual period.
