How To Clean Your Tongue

An important habit to get into on rising in the morning is to scrape your tongue.  It should be done correctly for optimum benefit to the inner systems of the body.  Tongue cleaning helps to prevent onset of many illnesses by removing toxins from the tongue and improving digestive fire.

During the night, toxins accumulate in the mouth and on the tongue as the body processes that day’s activities.  So the first thing to do when you wake up in the morning is spit out the saliva in your mouth.

The next thing to do is scrape your tongue with a copper or stainless steel tongue scraper.  These materials are much more effective than other materials as they can remove the impurities without being contaminated themselves.  This method is far more beneficial than using a toothbrush as it can massage the toxins gently and naturally.  In addition to removing bacteria from the tongue, scraping sends an indirect message to all the internal organs and stimulates gastric fire and digestive enzymes.

Simply hold the tongue scraper from the ends and GENTLY scrape your tongue from the back or base of the tongue forward, until you have scraped the whole surface (5-10 strokes).  Following this it is beneficial to clean your teeth then your mouth is cleansed and ready to start the day.

Tongue scrapers can be purchased from some health food stores or online from suppliers of Ayurvedic products.  You can also use the edge of a stainless steel spoon.  It is good to change your tongue scraper about every six months.
